Sweden and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have a long tradition of trading between the countries. The trade has been facilitated, mainly due to that fact that both parts has signed the World Trade Organization agreement and that both countries are members since the 1990-ies. (www.wto.org/english/thewto_e/whatis_e/tif_e/org6_e.htm). Sweden exported goods and services 2010 to the UAE for a value of 384.14 M EUR which represents 3.22% of the entire Swedish export. During 2010 the import from UAE to Sweden amounted to 18.98 M EUR, representing only 0.017% of the total Swedish import.

Table 1. Showed that the export from Sweden to the UAE has grown with 12.14% between 2005 and 2010.

Table 2 indicated that the amount of the import varied a lot during this period, from the lowest value in 2007, with only 12.71 M EUR up to 285.69 M EUR in year 2005.

Table 3 with figures from the 10 first months 2011, also showed that the trend from the years before consists, where Sweden export a lot mote the UAE then they import,  416.04 M EUR in export value compared with only 39.64 M EUR in import value.

 

The main goods exported from Sweden to the UAE is industrial engines and vehicles and the on the import side, oil and gas products have been most common.

Cooperation in economic sector:
The UAE is Sweden´s second largest export market in the Arab World after the Saudi Arabia. (www.scb.se) More than 250 Swedish companies are established the UAE, from the global firms IKEA, Volvo, H&M, AstraZeneca and Sony/Ericsson to minor firms in various businesses such as in the medical field and within the Cleantech field.(www.sbcuae.se) Sweden companies have been an important player in the development of the UAE during the last 40 years since the unification 1971, mainly within construction, health care systems and in the environmental field. See below. SymbioCityin Masdar City - the first carbon zero and waste free city in the world, outside Abu Dhabi. Sweden will have be represented in SymbioCity, where Swedish Cleantech and Sustainable Development will get there first representation office in the Middle East. www.masdar.ae.

 

Sweden and the United Arab Emirates have signed a five-year cooperation agreement in the environmental and energy technology. Its purpose is to promote technical cooperation and technology transfer in sustainable urban development and combating climate change. The Agreement was sign in June 2011, by Maud Olofsson, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Enterprise and Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister of the UAE. Participation at the World Future Energy Summit 2012

Swedish Trade Council is helping many companies with business establishment,www.swedishtrade.se.
 
Swedish Business Council in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are assisting Swedish companies locally in the Emirates, www.sbcuae.se.

Cooperation in health sector:
UAE patients have been treated at Swedish medical clinics during the last years, mainly with coordination from Stockholm International Care AB in Stockholm and Sahlgrenska International Care AB in Gothenburg. Cooperation in education:
Sweden is assisting in education of UAE Medical doctors at the University of Gothenburg, connected to the Sahlgrenska University hospital in Gothenburg. On-going cooperation between a medical department in Ajman and Malmö General Hospital (MAS).Here the nurse´s from the UAE get education in Malmö, Sweden, to learn how to use new equipment and new techniques, so they can handle by themselves in their own new clinic in the UAE. 
Start-up of cooperation of student exchanges between the Royal Technology Institute (KTH) and the Universities in the UAE.

 

Attractions and sights within culture and sports in the UAE:

Film
In Abu Dhabi there is an annual film festival. In December 2011you could watch the Swedish film, Stockholm East, directed by Simon Kaijser da Silva and produced by  Maria Nordenberg and Lars Blomgren The front figures in this film are Mikael Persbrandt, Iben Hjejle, Henrik Norlén, Liv Mjönes.www.abudhabifilmfestival.ae

 

Sailing
Abu Dhabi is one of the ports in the Volvo Ocean Race. Sail was set on New Year’s Eve 2011to remember and join Abu Dhabi as it readies to welcome a procession of awe-inspiring racing yachts, sea hardened sailors and more than 100,000 fans on January 1st 2012 as we host the third leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Participation of 6 teams, which one is from the UAE, the “Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing”. The UAE entry has recruited a strong and experienced crew that includes a core of Volvo veterans and a UAE national, Adil Khalid – trimmer on board. The boat is led by the double Olympic medalist and 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race skipper, Ian Walker. (www.volvooceanrace.com).

 

Golf
Emirates Golf Club, host of the PGA European Tour sanctioned  Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, boasts two of the city’s finest must-see courses; The Majlis and The Faldo, as well as a 9-hole Par 3 course, golf academy, a variety of restaurants and bars, gymnasium and tropical swimming pool. A lot of Swedes has competed in this tournament, during 2011, such us Peter Hedblom and  Niclas Fasth.(www.dubaidesertclassic.com/)

 

F1
Abu Dhabi is now one of the highlights of the entire F1 Circus races. The race take place at the Yas Marina Circuit, which was inaugurated 2010. Swede´s are welcome to visit Yas Marina Circuit for the F1 race in Abu Dhabi on the 2nd to 4th of November 2012.(http://www.formula1.com/)

 

Tennis
Aviation Club Tennis Centre has been home to The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships since its inauguration in 1993. Dubai Women's Open, 18th to 25th February 2011 and the Dubai Men’s Open, 25th February to 3rd Mars 2012. (www.dubaidutyfreetennischampionships.com).
